Sea Freight vs. Air Freight: How to Choose for Your Shipment

A straightforward breakdown of when sea freight makes sense, when air freight is worth the premium, and how to decide for your next shipment.

The sea freight versus air freight decision usually comes down to three factors: cost, speed, and cargo characteristics. Here's how to think through it.

Cost. Sea freight is dramatically cheaper per unit of volume or weight, especially for large shipments. Air freight typically costs 4-6x more per kilogram, though the gap narrows for very light, low-volume shipments where sea freight's fixed costs (container minimums, port handling) start to dominate.

Speed. Sea freight transit times typically run 20-45 days depending on origin, destination, and routing, plus time for port handling and customs clearance on both ends. Air freight cuts this to 3-7 days in most cases. If your business depends on inventory turnover speed or you're shipping against a tight deadline, that difference matters.

Cargo characteristics. High-value, low-weight goods — electronics components, pharmaceuticals, fashion samples — often justify air freight's premium because the cost difference is small relative to goods value, and speed reduces working capital tied up in transit. Bulky, heavy, lower-value goods — furniture, construction materials, bulk consumer goods — are almost always better served by sea freight.

A practical rule of thumb: if your freight cost as a percentage of goods value would exceed roughly 15-20% using air freight, sea freight is usually the better default unless you have a specific, timeline-driven reason to pay the premium.

Many businesses also use a hybrid approach — air freight for an initial smaller shipment to meet an urgent deadline or test a new market, with the bulk of the order following by sea freight at lower cost. This is worth discussing with your freight partner before you commit to one mode for an entire order.
